What Is An Escape Room?

The front door to our escape room business has a bell that signals us whenever the door has opened.  That distinctive ring is very helpful in letting us know when customers arrive to play a game; however, we get occasional “false alarms” when people come in looking for one of the businesses on either side of us.  At other times, we’ve had people walk in out of curiosity asking, “What is an escape room?”

Good question!  What is an escape room?  What it’s not is one of those metal rooms you put in your garage in which you hide out from a tornado.  That’s a safe room.  For those of you who are escape room aficionados, it’s a simple question, however, we have had numerous folks who had never heard of escape rooms come play their very first game with us over the past year.

The escape room experience is really two escapes in one.  First, it’s an opportunity to escape reality and your daily routine.  When you walk through the door, you step into a whole new world where you find yourself a detective, a wizard, a prisoner on a spaceship, or maybe even one of Santa’s elves.  You are no longer doing household chores whether carrying out the trash or feeding the family pet.  You’re not watching a TV show or reading a book about someone else’s adventures.  You’re living your own adventures!

The second “escape” you experience takes place as you explore your new surroundings (the jungle, Alice’s Wonderland, or maybe a psychiatrist’s office).  While the goal of some escape rooms is to escape a locked room, more likely, the “escape” is achieving an assignment you’ve been given such as winning a galactic battle, freeing a captive, or canceling a curse.  You do this by finding clues of various natures all around you and solving all kinds of puzzles. Some clues may be hidden while others sit in plain view waiting for you to put them in their place.  Escape rooms are designed to be a challenge to solve (or “escape”) some harder than others especially when you are given a deadline to do so, typically 60 minutes.  Since escape rooms generally require multiple players (can be 2 to 10), they also demand a lot of teamwork among players.  When everybody shares in the experience, the final “escape” is a truly exhilarating shared memory maker.

Now that you know what an escape room is, why not round up a few friends and family and come make your own “escape”?  It truly will be a fun experience you’ll never forget.  We’ll be waiting for you to ring our bell.
